fabulous friday

As you might imagine, I went a little crazy with the John Derian Target line.  I think it was partly the fact that I missed his first 2008 Target release and partly me just being all weird and excited about his new stuff. Thought I’d show you how we’ve been using it around the house. I know it’s not as glorious as his illustrious decoupage collection, but I love how this grouping captures his aesthetic and is totally kid/husband friendly.

Do pretty things make you smile and feel happy?  Me too. They don’t have to be pricey, just pretty.

I have to say that whenever I bring in new things to the house, I feel a little bit like a narrator on a National Geographic program because I like to sit back and watch how everyone here reacts to the new things in the environment.  Will they accept it? Will they not? Will they even notice???

(quietly whispering and narrating) It appears the alpha male has accepted the new collection of coffee cups…

(continuing to whisper) It seems the male has also accepted the small tray as a place to put several of his daily neccessities…

Overall everyone seemed happy with the new things.  Remember the plates I went nuts for?

Yep, snagged ’em.  Thought they were perfect for easy dinners and grill out nights. For our first night using them, I decided to make it fun and go on a nature hunt for clippings as our centerpiece. Youngest loved this idea. So he and I went on a little hike outside of the house and found various branches and stems to put in our containers at the table. Another opportunity for him to use a tool.

To keep it rustic, we even gathered pine cones.  A great {free} centerpiece idea, especially in the fall. This was also a fun way to get the kids involved in setting the table.

We’ve been using the cute little silhouette coasters. These have been more practical than I thought they would be and the offspring actually loved them.  They were very particular about who got which silhouette at their place setting…go figure?!?

Sidenote: Friend, Lauren, over at Pure Style Home introduced me to the idea of using simple yard clippings (versus always buying flowers) in your abode.  It’s totally free and surprisingly charming.  Check out her posts showing some beautiful clippings she’s used in her gorgeous home here here, and here. She also has a killer post on how to make your own pretty botanical prints in just 10 minutes right here.

Getting back to Derian, I decided to put my insane J.R. Watkins cleaning collection in these cute little moth bins.  They now appropriately live under the bathroom sink, which is an open shelving space so I can still see them all the time.

I was totally impressed with this little Derian frame…love the pattern and color and it was perfect for one of our wedding pics. And that’s one of Carole’s arrangements I kept as a reminder of her fun soiree.

Which brings me to YOU.  I loved the frame so much that I bought an extra one for a Fabulous Friday winner.  This frame is all sold out online and probably all gone in the stores, so I think it’s a treasure.

  59. I maybe don’t love the moth containers so much but that is only due to my fear of moths! But I love the frame. As soon as I logged on to your site and saw the plates I thought ‘John Derian’. I’m so pleased that you snagged lots of stuff. Have a great weekend.

Love the idea to use clippings as decor– we have four wall vases and I’m looking forward to trying some deep green branches and twigs for a fall look instead of the usual $4 supermarket bouquet that I grab when the flower start drooping! 71. Melissa says:

HI! I’m new to your blog and enjoying every post!!
I often get overwhelmed by the pressure of a centerpiece. So I appreciated seeing what you had done. Isn’t it wonderful to “kill 2 birds with 1 stone”? You got the little guy involved with a nature hunt and then used his treasures to create a pretty table. I’m sure he felt very proud and you all got to spend some great mother/son time together.
I also noticed in your pic of tray that we have the same taste in books. Happy reading and Happy Weekend… YaY!

  72. Jenn @ LL4L says:

What a wonderful post! I absolutely love how you not only showed what you bought, but you showed us how you used it in your home. That is so smart, and so helpful for us readers! This frame is so pretty, it is probably my favorite piece of the collection!
