surprise surprise…

Oh my gosh you had me on the floor laughing with your comments from the giveaway.  I had so much fun reading each and every one!!  Isn’t it crazy what parents decide we can and cannot wear during our formative teenage years?  And God help those of us who grew up in the 80′s, ugh, our fashion choices were gag-me-with-a-spoon fabulous.  While reading, I was amazed how many of you said you weren’t allowed to wear your hair down…or even long.  And there were lots of Catholic school girl moments, ha ha.

A little surprise – we were so entertained by your answers that we chose one winner per earring set for the Perspicasity giveaway!  The answers deserve a reprint so I’m sharing…I also added some style thoughts with each winner announcement.

“I was not allowed to pierce my ears and wear earrings when I was in high school — until my dad went out of town and my mother, sister, and I all went together and had our ears pierced. Dad came back and we got scolded, but he did go out and buy all of us our first pair of earrings to wear once the posts came out. He’s an ol’ sweetie! Love the mod sparkle earrings!”

Jill, a rebel piercing and mom/sister revolt all wrapped up in one?  Love it!  Sounds Papa Bear was (and is) a trooper ; )  I bet this sentimental personalized keychain would be a sweet gift from his fab female posse on his next birthday…

2.  Turquoise winner –  Chrissy #70:

“I was forbidden to get my ears pierced when I was growing up. My mom always said, ‘If God wanted you to have holes in your ears, he would have put them there!’  Of course, I promptly went out and got them pierced in college! :)”  

Chrissy, ohhh the classic “God guilt trip” Mom card always trumps them all.  I’ve used that one a few times when desperate.  We moms always want our girls to be good girls…no matter the cost. Guess it’s an occupational hazard!  I bet your Mom is no longer worried about your pierced ears, ha ha.  And she certainly would approve of any of these dreamy Ex Voto necklaces accented with vintage lockets and pearls.

3.  Shimmering Shells winner –  Toto #108:

“Growing up in the 70′s, I had really long (waist length) hair and being a little Italian kid, it was super thick as well. I was not allowed to wear it down. My Mom would painstakingly put my hair up every day in either a pony tail, braids or the dreaded bun. I had intense hatred for the little mesh donut shaped thingy that she rolled my hair up in to make the perfect bun on top (or back) of my head. Ugh! I was expected to come home from school with the same “do” I departed with. Once, I got up my courage to undo the bun, deciding I could easily recreate it on the bus on the way home. Twas not to be. I returned home with a sad version of Mom’s handiwork, hair sticking out all over and most of the meshy thing exposed and stuck on the right side of my head. She never made me wear “the bun” again.”

Toto, nothing like a the panic bun-redo on the school bus.  I wonder – do you still wear buns?  My fave is a “messy” bun look.  Great for an evening out or way to add some edge to a preppy outfit.  Check out some of my favorite messy buns right over here.

“oh my goodness the list is long! dangle earrings for sure. and bell bottoms (70s kid). but i remember that the one thing that tormented me was that i was not allowed to wear my long. blonde hair down – always had to be in ponies or braids. my very busy mother of 5 was surely tired of combing out all of the knots that came along with the long flowing locks, but i was sure at the time that she made me do it out of sheer mean-ness, ha ha. but like you, seleta, to this day i never wear my hair long – it’s always in a pony or braid or bun! ha! old habits….”

Susan, I can appreciate old habits for sure!  Love this link sharing current braid styles for short or long locks.  I think the Braided Halo and Side Fishtail are my two faves.
