Joffrey Ballet Concert Group coming to SEASIDE!

One of my lifelong passions is ballet; it has been a key part of my life since I was a child and gifted me with treasures beyond physical skills and scholarships.  Ballet has given me patience, courage, confidence, creative expression, and a deep appreciation for a beautiful art form that has captivated audiences for hundreds of years.  There were times that ballet gave me hope and focus, and was even a reprieve during personal trials in life.

When we moved to the beach in 2007, I noticed there were no ballet classes or performances in our little town, which felt very incomplete to me.  So many young people and adults were missing the gift of ballet in their life.  I decided to work on this personal goal:

My mission is to ignite a passion for classical ballet programs and performances in our community; to provide our youth with quality classical dance education and performance opportunities; to inspire and expand the ballet audience.

In the summer of 2011, I co-founded a dance education program at Seaside Neighborhood School with our visionary principal, Cathy Brubaker, and another instructor.  In the blink of an eye, I was teaching ballet to recreational students at the school.  The program was able to continue thanks to the huge support of Seaside co-founder and friend, Daryl Davis.  I continued to seek more ballet education and performance opportunities for youth in our community, and Daryl passionately supported and encouraged more.  As a result, we have collaborated with incredible guest artists who have taught and influenced hopeful ballet dancers right here in Seaside, Florida.  You might recall this post introducing our first guest artist.

Last January I had a crazy thought:  “What if we could bring a New York ballet company to our town for a performance and ballet workshop?”  I built up a little courage and called the Joffrey Ballet School.  I asked if they would consider coming to our area for a ballet workshop and company performance.  After a few conference calls, budget reviews, and emails, they said yes.  I was thrilled!  I ran the idea past Daryl.  She loved it.  We all moved forward without looking back.  And here we are today.

On May 2nd, SEASIDE® is hosting a performance by the Joffrey Ballet Concert Group for a one and a half hour show in the Seaside Amphitheater.  The performance begins at sunset, is free to the public, and is brought to you by the Merchants of Seaside.  What a beautiful gift to our community.

The Joffrey Ballet School has a world-renowned reputation as a premier institution of American dance. Their concert group, a pre-professional company under the artistic direction of Davis Robertson, is a platform for some of the nation’s best young dancers to launch their professional careers.  They tour the world performing their diverse repertoire.  We are fortunate to have them in Seaside!

In addition to the performance, Joffrey Ballet Concert Group Artistic Director, Davis Robertson, will conduct a three day workshop for dancers in our community while here with his company.  Last October, Mr. Robertson visited Seaside and auditioned local dancers to participate in this workshop.

After auditions, we were finally able to celebrate our venture and unite Davis Robertson with Seaside founders Daryl and Robert Davis.  We enjoyed lunch at Bud and Alley’s overlooking the water.  The Davis/Robert/Robertson name combination is uncanny…and hard to keep straight during a conversation.

We are honored to have Davis Robertson here again for both the Joffrey Ballet Concert Group performance and workshop.  He is one of those crazy-talented, generous, and charismatic people you meet in life and never forget.  I enjoyed every minute of his visit in October and can’t wait to see him here again next month.

This will be the first Joffrey Ballet Concert Group performance in SEASIDE®, as well as in the Northwest Florida region.  It will be breathtaking to see the talent of their dancers perform under the stars in the magical setting of Seaside.  Can you imagine?  I can’t wait.  Be sure to book your calendar and join us in this AMAZING show!

On a personal note, it’s fulfilling to help bring more ballet into our community and provide education and performance opportunities to future and current ballet dancers.  Ballet is such a beautiful art form – my hope is to inspire as many enthusiasts as possible and continue to broaden our ballet talent and audience.  Huge thanks to Daryl Davis for believing in a dream, our amazing SEASIDE® marketing and events team (Lori Smith, Kevin Boyle, Pam Avera) for their vision and work, and our sponsors, the Merchants of Seaside for supporting this venture.

**To celebrate this exciting event and the 7 year anniversary of simply seleta, we have an unbelievable SEASIDE® giveaway I cannot wait to share…stay tuned!!!**
