behind the scenes valentine

We got all crafty last night.

valentine2

Well, I should qualify that.  The men in our family vanished and the women folk were left to their craftiness.  The guys later came home with dinner for us all.  Not a bad deal.

It was such a fun night.  Can I just tell you how much I lovvvvvve doing projects with my little detail divas?  We printed out the cute Valentine tags I told you about last week and the girls actually glued those tags onto red card stock and added personalized messages on them…THEN cut out little hearts in this free printable and made pop ups and attached to their finished cards.  I tried to photograph them but they sealed their little treat bags so fast I couldn’t keep up!  It is so fun watching them channel their creative side : )  I enjoy my children more and more as they get older, it’s so cool.

I continue with my jar obsession.  So we made some extra special treats for teachers in addition to the cards.  This time we made toppers for the tiniest little mason jars I’ve ever seen.  So cute I could squeeze them!!

We filled them with pink candy corns, I typed a little message for the tops and the girls and I cut them down to size.  We’re not exactly candy corn gals, but the colors were just too fun to pass up.

SILHOUETTES ON THE JARS:

1.  For my oldest daughter’s jar tops I used a fun little font called DJ Horses.  You can download it for free over here.  I use it all the time.

2.  For my youngest daughter I used a silhouette font that’s super feminine.  It’s called CK Silhouette.  Also free and can be downloaded over here.  There are only 13 characters but it’s so sweet.

I was planning to take pics this morning of the kids all dolled up in their Valentine colors (with their hair styled/brushed) but it was complete madness trying to feed them and get out the door.  The girls ended up brushing their hair in the car.  Reality always kicks my bootie!

Have to brag on my sweetheart, who just brought me some beautiful white roses and a bag filled with all kinds of goodies.  Love you husband.

Wishing everyone a Valentine’s Day filled with love.

wednesday white

Hello there, Wednesday.   You’re looking rather shiny and white today.

wed white

I spy a pretty house and a happy dog, a swell combination.

This luscious Steven Gambrel design is a perfect appetizer for tomorrow’s topic: mixing metals.

And speaking of metal, I’ll share with you two of my current favorite everyday flatware patterns.  I know, right out of left field.  A consequential effect of posting after midnight, I suppose.

First up, my personal flatware, Equestrian Braid by Ralph Lauren.  Naturally goes with the pervasive horse theme in my life.  I’ve had this pattern so long – like 15 years or something.  And still love it.  I think it’s actually discontinued but you can get it almost everywhere – just google it.

I also fancy this flatware by Crate & Barrel.  It’s just fresh and lovely.  Tiffany and Co. makes a sterling silver bamboo flatware line that is unforgettable and this is a nice version of it, for a much more affordable  price.

I must have metal on the brain, back tomorrow morning for more discussion…this time it will be silver and gold.

unbridled confession

Ahhhh, it’s Monday.  We survived the weekend.  I say survive because with children, each weekend presents its own unique blend of adventures.  Some are just plain fun and effortless yet others are downright exhausting.  You can plan away, but you never quite know which you will get.  It’s generally a function of the combination of our activities mixed with the general mood of the house.  May sound crazy, but rearing children at times reminds me of training an energized colt or filly…while many days are good with tremendous progress, others a little more challenging and you feel as if you took five steps back from your goal.  Or you were hit by a Mac truck, ha.  I find it best to always begin and end with love.  While standing your ground.  This feat takes serious endurance….with a clever mix of wit and humor.

horseness

Never easy.  But always worth it.

I think the hardest thing for me as a parent is standing my ground.  It’s been a real journey learning how to confidently set boundaries and not feel guilty or cave.  Interestingly enough, this issue also pops up in riding life with my horse, Savez.  Sometimes I have to bust out my tough side and get all crazy with my kids and insist, “no further discussion.”  I usually finish with “you’ll thank me when you’re 30.”  Oh how they love me.

Yes, rearing a family takes grit.  And I’m learning, just like riding with confidence, it’s not the least bit impossible.

Hats off to ALL moms and dads who, day after day, work hard to raise their family.  And to all the moms and dads who raised the generation before them.  Providing love and leadership to your children is such a privilege and gift.  And certainly makes this world a better place.
